What version of gawk are you using? I've seen weird bugs show up on
OSF with *old* versions of gawk in the past...

Try these at the shell prompt, and see which fails:

grep TCL_PATCH_LEVEL /usr/local/include/tcl.h | head -1 | gawk '{gsub(/\"/, "", $3); print $3}'`"

echo 8.0 | gawk '{split($1, i, "."); if (i[1] < 7) print "yes"; else print "no"}'`

echo 8.0 | gawk '{split($1, i, "."); if (((i[1] == 7) && (i[2] < 5)) || (i[1] < 7)) print "yes"; else print "no"}'`

echo 8.0 | gawk '{split($1, i, "."); if (((i[1] == 7) && (i[2] < 4)) || (i[1] < 7)) print "yes"; else print "no"}'`

I really don't see why any of these would cause problems however, as they
are all very simple awk scripts.
